Root Canals

Serving the Wheelersburg Community

Root canal therapy is a common dental procedure that is essential for saving teeth that have become infected or severely decayed. At VZ Dentistry, we provide endodontic treatment to relieve pain, preserve natural teeth, and prevent the spread of infection. Our goal is to ensure that the procedure is as comfortable and effective as possible, using the latest techniques and technologies. We also work closely with our preferred endodontists, who you may be referred to for some root canal therapies.

Understanding Root Canals

The term “root canal” refers to the natural cavity within the center of the tooth, which houses the pulp (nerve tissue, blood vessels, and connective tissue). A root canal procedure is necessary when the pulp becomes inflamed or infected due to deep decay, repeated dental procedures on the tooth, cracks, chips, or other injuries. If left untreated, this infection can cause severe pain, swelling, and even bone loss around the tooth’s root.

Benefits of Root Canal Therapy

  • Pain Relief: Root canal treatment eliminates pain caused by decay or infection in the tooth’s pulp.
  • Tooth Preservation: The procedure allows you to keep your natural tooth, avoiding the need for extraction and replacement with artificial alternatives.
  • Prevention of Further Damage: By removing the infected or inflamed pulp, root canal therapy prevents the spread of infection to other teeth and reduces the risk of jawbone degeneration.

The Root Canal Procedure

  1. Diagnosis: Dr. VanZanten will perform a thorough examination, including X-rays, to determine the extent of the infection and plan the treatment.
  2. Anesthesia: Local anesthesia is administered to ensure comfort throughout the procedure.
  3. Pulp Removal: A small opening is made in the crown of the tooth to access and remove the infected or inflamed pulp.
  4. Cleaning and Shaping: The root canal is thoroughly cleaned, disinfected, and shaped to prepare it for filling.
  5. Filling the Canal: The cleaned and shaped canal is filled with a biocompatible material, usually gutta-percha, and sealed with adhesive cement to prevent bacteria from re-entering.
  6. Restoration: After the root canal is complete, the tooth will need a crown or filling to restore its natural function and appearance. This final restoration protects the tooth from future damage and restores its full functionality.
